Would You Eat Bull's Balls?

My sister, after 3 months abroad, finally posted her first set of pictures from her experience living in Moldova (a small post-Soviet country located between Ukraine and Romania). Laura is stationed in Moldova as a Volunteer for the US Peace Corps, and was officially inducted last Thursday after 3 months of intensive training. I've had lots of questions for her since she's been gone, and have been anxiously awaiting pictures of her adventures. Specifically, I've asked her to take pictures of the food she eats and send me some recipes, if possible, because I'm quite sure the Moldovan diet is quite a bit different than what we eat here in Chicago.

All in all, it sounds like the food is pretty tasty there. She hasn't complained about it at all, and even has proclaimed some of her meals the best she's ever had. During the summer, it seems like they focus on fresh, seasonal produce grown within the communities where they live. Dishes seem to revolve around proteins like pork, chicken, and goat as well as vegetables and rice / bread. Breakfast generally includes meats (in wienie form) and cheeses, along with bread and juices (see picture above). In the winter, I'm sure this will change, and they will eat a lot more root vegetables and canned goods - fresh imported produce like we enjoy here in the States won't be an option.

Anyway, one of her first interesting food experiences occured close to her arrival in the country when she joined some other volunteers at a local restaurant for dinner. A bold man in the group decided to try one of the local delicacies - bull testicals - and I sure am glad she took a picture of the event for me to see (picture above). I must say, bull balls don't look at all like what I expected, but according to Laura, they taste exactly as you might imagine (if you have such an imagination): dense, but soft and oddly squishy. And, while they weren't as repulsive in taste as you might think, Laura (who is not a picky eater, I might add), stated that they were "not very tasty". Oh, well. Maybe it depends on the sauce?
